Engine options for 7th gen Camaro

First off, thank goodness the EV Camaro never materialized (or got nixed)!

Now the fun speculation begins on ICE engine options possible for the 7th gen. Here's possible options I could think of...

6.7L V8 LS6 engine -- new one from 2027 Corvette Grand Sport
Supercharged 6.2L V8 LT4 engine -- from CT5-V Blackwing
Turbo 2.7L I4 L3B engine -- from Cadillac CT4-V
Twin-Turbo 3.0L V6 LGY engine -- from Cadillac CT5

What you guys think we'll get for the first model year 2028 Camaro?

SS, 6.2l LT4 like the base model Vette. Lower trim levels, either the LFX like the Blazer or maybe a turbo 4.

I’ll throw in my thinking, at least for the SS.

The C8 got the LT2 which is an extremely close sibling to the LT1, iirc the main divergence of the LT2 was being solely dedicated to mid-engine application.

I think the LS6 will be the ‘Vette’ engine, and we’ll get a slightly changed variant (same 6.6L).

After 2027, the LT4 will be the only non-truck variant Gen V engine in service (CT5-V BW & Escalade-V). I think the LT4 will ‘retire’ once those models finish their generations.

Don’t think we’ll get the twin turbo V6 but I do think the LGX is near retirement as well, it’s only used in the XT5 and Blazer now and it’s been some time since they’ve been using it.

Maybe a new gen of the High Feature V6?

4 cylinder: LSY seems to be pretty active still, only downside is the start/stop addition but it’s essentially a newer LTG.

I like to think they’d go all out and do a new gen of the Ecotec engines but could go any number of ways for the fuel economy crowd.

I like the low end torque from the 6.2 pushrod LT1/LT4, and I also don't think any cross-plane crank DOHC engines exist, so we'd have to compromise on the sound, too... the GT350 was the only one with a proper sound, but it had a goofy flat-plane and twisty headers to achieve that.

No not really. The big takaway is the oversquare design. Large piston short stroke, it's great for high rpm power. Pretty much the reason the dz302 in the 69 z28 kicked ass back in the day.
Dohc has an advantage of controlling exhaust and intake cams independently. And then spark plugs are located in the center of the combustion chamber. But all the brackets required for the cam mounting get in the way of making intake runners big. So the trade off for that is either make the head even bigger or have small runners.
Its why the LS design heads were superior. Huge intake runners in a tight package.
Direct contact from the cam to the valve is good but the advantage over ohv can be negated with just good parts.

Highly doubt they wouldn't put DFM. The 6th Gen Camaro was one of the last to stick with AFM; the trucks went to DFM, and it was essentially the same engine.

Agreed , I spent a pretty penny on completely neutralizing AFM on my SS, it would be nice not to have to deal with that again.

Looks like at least we won't need to worry about auto start/stop, though.

I hope they do, DOHC is overrated and low end torque is unbeatable. No wonder so many are enamored with electric cars, they deliver that in oodles (which is also why I'd love to see AWD via a smaller, 150-200hp electric motor on the front axle).

Considering the 6th gen chassis, I don't see how, but you know what they say, one can always hope , and GM certainly has every piece of technology and know-how to make it happen, if it's physically possible.

Technically we could have had an awd option in the 6th gen. All the parts were there in the cts 6 cylinder and 4 cylinder cars.

They should get rid of the 4 and 6 cylinder and replace with smaller more economic V8 like what Dodge did with the 5.7. Like a 5.3L with 400HP as the base model

One thing we mustn't forget is that a new Camaro can't start at $50-60K, it isn't and shouldn't be a Corvette. In 2016, the base trim of the Camaro was well under $30K, specifically $26,695 for the four-banger and $28,190 for the V6.

While this wouldn't be realistic in 2027-2028, price was one of the additional reasons the car didn't sell well enough, as younger buyers less likely to be disappointed by the car's shortcomings, perceived or real, still didn't bite enough for the lower trims (and probably couldn't afford the more interesting higher trims or freely option in the few things they may have really wanted).

If GM offered an attractive 7th gen base Camaro for under $35K, I think that would be low enough to drive more "baseline" sales, which could then sustain a low selling top end V8 and FI V8 combo.
